Position Overview

This role leads the establishment of external funding opportunities for the organization’s innovative medicines program and supports global public health R&D initiatives. Reporting to senior R&D leadership, the position drives grant development strategy, coordinates proposal efforts, and builds institutional capacity for sustained funding success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end process of grant proposal development, from opportunity scanning to submission coordination.
  • Work closely with R&D teams to identify funding gaps and align proposals with institutional research priorities.
  • Identify, analyze, and track national and international funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with R&D leads, research teams, and leadership to develop competitive, high-quality proposals.
  • Liaise with funding agencies, partners, and collaborators to ensure compliance with submission requirements.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of global and national funding landscapes and emerging trends in health research funding.
  • Mentor junior staff and build institutional capacity in proposal writing and grant management.
  • Develop and lead an external grant funding office of 2–3 team members.
  • Coordinate post-award documentation and communication with funders.
  • Develop templates, tools, and systems to streamline proposal development and internal review processes.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Education: PhD in Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, Health Policy, Life Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5–10 years of post-PhD experience in grant writing, proposal development, and securing external funding for research and programs.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to mentor staff and manage a small team; experience collaborating with senior R&D leadership and external partners.
  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrated success in obtaining competitive grants from agencies such as ICMR, DBT, DST, CSIR, SERB, Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, NIH, USAID, CEPI, and Gavi; familiarity with funding portals and submission systems (e.g., Research Councils, NIH ASSIST, Wellcome Trust).
  • Soft Skills: Strategic thinking, analytical capability, strong project management, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills; ability to translate scientific ideas into compelling narratives.
