Position: Assistant General Manager – Business Development (In-Licensing & Out-Licensing), Emerging Markets
Location: Pune, India
Reporting To: AVP – Business Development (In-Licensing)
Position Summary
The Assistant General Manager – Business Development (In-Licensing & Out-Licensing), Emerging Markets will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and executing strategic licensing opportunities that strengthen product portfolio across Emerging Markets, including Africa, Southeast Asia, CIS, LATAM, and other international geographies.
The role will lead the evaluation of in-licensing opportunities, coordinate technical and commercial due diligence, develop robust business cases, and work closely with internal cross-functional teams and external partners to ensure successful execution of licensing projects through commercialization. The incumbent will also support out-licensing initiatives where applicable, enabling value creation through strategic alliances and portfolio expansion.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Opportunity Identification
- Identify and evaluate potential in-licensing opportunities from Indian pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and other strategic partners for Emerging Markets.
- Build and maintain a strong network of licensing partners, manufacturers, and technology providers.
- Support out-licensing initiatives by identifying suitable international partners for products and technologies where appropriate.
- Continuously assess new product opportunities aligned with regional commercial strategies and therapeutic priorities.
Technical & Commercial Due Diligence
- Coordinate and conduct technical due diligence of licensing opportunities in collaboration with R&D, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Intellectual Property, and Supply Chain teams.
- Evaluate manufacturing capabilities, product quality, regulatory status, intellectual property position, development timelines, and commercialization feasibility.
- Identify potential technical and commercial risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
Business Case Development
- Prepare comprehensive business cases for proposed licensing opportunities based on market assessments, commercial forecasts, pricing, profitability, investment requirements, and competitive positioning.
- Collaborate with Country Managers and Commercial teams to obtain market insights, demand forecasts, pricing assumptions, market share estimates, and launch strategies.
- Develop financial models to evaluate revenue potential, profitability, return on investment (ROI), and payback periods.
Market Intelligence & Portfolio Assessment
- Monitor pharmaceutical market trends, therapeutic area developments, patent landscapes, regulatory changes, and competitor activities across Emerging Markets.
- Analyze licensing opportunities using market intelligence, epidemiology, competitive benchmarking, and portfolio gap assessments.
- Recommend products that strengthen regional portfolio and long-term growth strategy.
Project Management & Execution
- Ensure timely execution of licensing projects from opportunity assessment through commercial launch.
- Track partner deliverables, development milestones, technology transfer, regulatory submissions, and product launch timelines.
- Identify execution bottlenecks, facilitate cross-functional problem-solving, and drive timely resolution of issues.
- Coordinate with Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, Packaging Development, Finance, Legal, and Commercial teams to ensure seamless project execution.
Stakeholder Management
- Organize business review meetings, conference calls, due diligence discussions, and partner interactions.
- Prepare presentations and executive summaries for internal management reviews and licensing committees.
- Participate in negotiations and support contract discussions alongside Legal and senior Business Development leadership.
- Build strong relationships with external partners, licensors, distributors, and internal stakeholders.
Database & Reporting
- Maintain and regularly update Business Development databases, opportunity trackers, partner profiles, pipeline dashboards, and project status reports.
- Monitor licensing pipeline progress and prepare periodic reports for leadership reviews.
- Ensure accurate documentation of due diligence findings, project milestones, and commercial evaluations.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, or a related discipline.
- MBA in Marketing, International Business, Finance, or Strategy is preferred.
Experience
- 8–12 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry with significant exposure to Business Development, In-Licensing, Portfolio Management, Product Management, or International Business.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating pharmaceutical licensing opportunities.
- Strong understanding of branded formulations, generic pharmaceuticals, product development, and commercialization.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams across Regulatory Affairs, R&D, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Commercial functions.
- Exposure to Emerging Markets business is highly desirable.
