Position Overview

The HOD – Legal is responsible for overseeing litigation matters filed by and against the company, while executing legal strategies aligned with senior leadership’s direction. The role focuses on protecting the company’s interests, mitigating legal and financial risks, and minimizing potential losses arising from litigation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop strategies to secure favorable orders from judicial, quasi-judicial bodies, forums, commissions, and tribunals.
  • Brief Advocates and Senior Advocates on legal and litigation matters to obtain opinions and clarifications, coordinating litigation and case filings.
  • Coordinate with Advocates and Law Firms to ensure effective pleadings and court hearings.
  • Prepare fact sheets on disputed matters supported by relevant judgments.
  • Track and follow up on cases daily to ensure timely progress.
  • Maintain comprehensive legal files, documents, and records.
  • Draft legal documents including plaints, written statements, applications, complaints, notices, replies, rejoinders, affidavits, counters, and writ petitions.
  • Draft, vet, review, and finalize various contracts and agreements such as MOUs, NDAs, leave and license agreements, power of attorney, indemnity bonds, sale deeds, lease deeds, commission agreements, service contracts, vendor agreements, and labor agreements.
  • Incorporate protective clauses in documents originating from different departments.
  • Draft and vet pleadings for legal cases.
  • Coordinate the lodging of FIRs and police complaints against consumers involved in electricity theft.
  • Coordinate the lodging of FIRs and police complaints against individuals who misbehave or manhandle company employees during inspections, and assist police in filing charge sheets.
  • Prepare monthly legal statements (MIS) to update management on case progress.
  • Apply knowledge of Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Civil Procedure Code, Evidence Act, Consumer Protection Act, Electricity Act, RTI Act, Legal Service Authority Act, Negotiable Instrument Act, and Arbitration & Conciliation Act in legal matters.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Education: LL.B. (3 years course), LL.M., or LL.B. with Integrated 5 years course; MBA is an additional advantage.
  • Experience: 15 years to 25 years in legal practice, preferably with knowledge of Electricity Laws and court practice at District Court, High Court, or Supreme Court.
  • Leadership: Experience managing legal functions with cross-functional coordination and external stakeholder engagement.
  • Technical Expertise: Expertise in litigation management, contract drafting and vetting, legal compliance, and familiarity with multiple legal codes and acts.
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to convey complex legal concepts effectively, high ethical standards, integrity, professionalism, and commitment to confidentiality and compliance.
