Position Overview

The Group Chief Commercial Officer – Manufacturing leads the development and execution of integrated commercial strategies aligned to the Group’s manufacturing operations. Reporting directly to the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) and serving as a member of the Executive Committee (ExCo), this role ensures optimal market positioning, revenue growth, and profitability through alignment of sales, marketing, production planning, and supply chain capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership as part of the Executive Committee (ExCo) to drive commercial growth and corporate business development initiatives.
  • Advise the Group CEO on marketing trends, competitive positioning, and business improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and implement the commercial vision, strategy, and resource plans to deliver on Business P&L objectives.
  • Lead institutional bidding strategies for large-scale government and NGO tenders across East Africa.
  • Oversee branding, sales force effectiveness, product positioning, pricing, and market access strategies across the Group.
  • Manage Gross-to-Net (GTN) profitability by optimizing trade spends, distributor margins, and pricing corridors.
  • Identify and develop new markets, product diversification, export opportunities, and value-added manufacturing initiatives.
  • Drive the Integrated Business Planning (IBP) process to align market demand with manufacturing capacity.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to the Commercial Department, ensuring performance management, KPI tracking, and succession planning.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with key customers, distributors, regulators, and industrial partners.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and internal commercial governance policies.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Education: Honors Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Business, Chemistry, Biotechnology, or Science. A Master’s degree in Business Administration or related field is desirable.
  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years in a related field, including at least 5 years at ExCo/Director level within manufacturing or pharmaceutical sectors.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead large, diverse teams and influence cross-functional stakeholders at executive level.
  • Technical Expertise: Strategic mindset, financial acumen, analytical and problem-solving skills, proficiency in ERP, MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Word; strong negotiation and communication capabilities.
  • Soft Skills: Collaborative, results-oriented, agile, decisive, and skilled in stakeholder influence, business acumen, and crisis management.
